Janus kinases (Jaks), signal transducers and activators of transcription (Stats) form a unique, fast track for signal transduction from cell surface receptors to target genes. Jak-Stat signalling contributes in many ways to the integrity of organisms and disturbance of this signalling avenue causes disease in mammalian organisms, including humans.

The research group pioneered molecular insights into leukemia onset via persistent Stat5 activation (Moriggl et al., 2005), as well as into lymphoma formation due to persistent Stat3 activation (manuscript in preparation). Currently, we investigate post-translational modifications on persistenly activated Stat5 isoforms like glycosylation or serine phosphorylation. Moreover, we undertook studies on human colon cancer or breast cancer on the involvement of Stat3 in Metalloproteinase regulation or Stat activation in metastasis mouse models (Jechlinger et al., 2006; Tsareva et al., 2006).
